Navigating Wheelchair Repairs: Understanding Your Health Plan Coverage

Your wheelchair is more than just a mobility aid; it's a lifeline to independence and freedom. But like any piece of equipment, it requires regular maintenance and occasional repairs to keep it running smoothly. Understanding what is covered by your health plan can save you from unexpected expenses and ensure that your wheelchair operates safely and efficiently.

The Importance of Maintenance:

Regular maintenance is essential for keeping your wheelchair in top condition. Working with your service dealer to perform essential maintenance tasks can prevent breakdowns and ensure that your wheelchair operates safely. From routine cleaning to regular check-ups, these tasks are crucial for prolonging the life of your equipment and minimizing the need for costly repairs.

Understanding Your Health Plan Coverage:

Before scheduling any repairs or maintenance, it's important to understand what services are covered by your health plan. As a general rule, Medicare and/or Medi-Cal typically do not cover routine cleaning, testing, or regular check-ups of your equipment. However, there are specific coverage restrictions and guidelines that you should be aware of:

Medicare Coverage:

Rental Wheelchairs: If you're using a rental wheelchair, Medicare includes service and maintenance charges as part of the rental fee. After 15 months of rental, Medicare will pay a fee every 6 months for service or maintenance. However, recipients or their secondary insurance will typically be responsible for a 20% copay.

Purchased Wheelchairs: For purchased wheelchairs, Medicare pays for reasonable repairs. Recipients or their secondary insurance are typically responsible for a 20% copay.

Replacement Equipment: Medicare covers replacement equipment if there has been permanent damage, wear and tear, or if your condition changes, necessitating new equipment. However, a new prescription and evaluation are required for replacement equipment.

Medi-Cal Coverage: Replacement Parts and Labor: Medi-Cal generally covers replacement parts and labor charges. However, most parts require a TAR (Treatment Authorization Request) if the entire repair exceeds $250 before the expiration of its life expectancy. A physician's order is also required for all Medi-Cal services of equipment.

Navigating the Process:

Understanding the intricacies of your health plan coverage can be daunting, but it's essential for avoiding unexpected expenses and misunderstandings. Before scheduling any repairs or maintenance, be sure to consult your health plan provider to determine what services are covered and what you may be expected to pay for out of pocket. By staying informed and proactive, you can ensure that your wheelchair remains in top condition, allowing you to maintain your independence and mobility with confidence.
