Traveling as a Custom Wheelchair User Just Became More Accessible
Traveling as a wheelchair user just got a lot easier with United Airlines' new digital tool! Designed to help customers find flights that can accommodate their custom wheelchair needs, this handy feature is available on the United app and united.com. Simply input the dimensions of your manual or power wheelchair to find compatible flights. Plus, if you need to book a higher-fare flight due to size constraints, United will refund the fare difference, so you don't have to worry about extra costs.
This tool, created with help from the United Spinal Association and United’s Accessible Travel Advisory Board, aims to make travel smoother and more enjoyable for wheelchair users such an individuals with Spinal Cord Injuries, Spinal Bífida, Muscular Dystrophy, ALS, and more. It's especially beneficial for our Access Medical patients, as it helps prevent damage to custom wheelchairs and avoids unnecessary repairs. United is also testing a program that provides specialized loaner wheelchairs and reimburse transportation costs if your manual or power wheelchair is damaged or delayed.
Of course, remember that if your chair does unfortunately get damaged, call Access Medical to receive free troubleshooting over the phone to try to get your custom wheelchair moving again! If we're unable to resolve the problem over the phone, we will get you a wheelchair service appointment ASAP and even provide a loaner wheelchair while we're fixing the damages. By introducing these improvements, United Airlines is making air travel more accessible and stress-free for everyone. We hope this makes your travels more comfortable and enjoyable, especially for our Access Medical patients with custom wheelchairs!
